Burradon and Camperdown
The Commemoration of the 150th Anniversary of the 1860 Mining Disaster
Rt Hon Stephen Byers MP and Gill Alexander made speeches regarding the importance of commemorating the tragedy and the opportunities that education had provided to the later generations. The speeches also reminded people of the significant role of community spirit within any village which had enabled the residents of Burradon to overcome the devastation of the mining disaster.
A minutes silence was observed at 2.30pm the reported time of the explosion to remember the victims.
Steven Byers and Bill Marley unveiled the artwork which is displayed in the main hall.
We wish to convey our appreciation to Miss Hunter, teachers and children for their hard work and dedication and the wonderful service which was a fitting tribute to the memory of the men and boys who perished in the explosion of 2 March 1860.
