VICTIMS OF THE MINING DISASTER
This is a list of the persons who were working in the mine when the disaster struck, or who died trying to rescue trapped workers. It has been compiled from contemporary newspaper reports.
David Addy, 55. Father of David, 22 and John, 24. His wife was aged 61. The support of his aged mother. Hewer, who worked in the straight-up flat near Marshall. Body recovered on Tuesday.

John Addy, 24. Single. Body recovered on Monday night.
William Alderson, 39. Back-overman. A wife and six children: Mrs. Alderson 39, Richard 15, Ann 13, George 11, Adam 8, Eleanor 6, Robert 1. Body recovered on Friday before 8:00p.m.
Alfred Allen, 30. Single, a cousin of John Beadlen, 11.
John Beadlen, 11. Trapper. First body recovered.
Thomas Beadlen, 20. Son of a widow, 38, and brother to Zachariah 14, Luke 11, Isabella 8, Dorothy 4.
James Brown, 38. A wife and three children: Mrs. Brown 36, Elizabeth 12, John 8, James 1. Body recovered on Monday night.
James Brown, 38. First day in the pit, just transferred from Hartley Colliery. A wife and two children: Mrs. Brown 27, George 5, Thomas 1.
John Carr, 21. Single.
John Carr, 40. A wife and six children: Mrs. Carr 35, Samuel 15, William 13, Joseph 11, Elizabeth 9, John 7, Richard 5, Robert 3, Ann (infant). Hewer. Worked near Maddox and was killed by afterdamp at his own board. Body recovered on Saturday.
Samuel Carr, 15. Putter for Soulsby. Was working in the middle-south. Body recovered on Friday near the top of the incline.
Matthew Cleghorn, 33. First day in the pit, just transferred from Hartley Colliery. A wife. Body recovered on Friday before 8:00p.m. A local preacher.
William Cook, 11.
Thomas Dawson, 21. Single. Had recently moved from Durham and was living with his mother. Body recovered on Friday before 8:00p.m, burnt to a cinder and blown into pieces.
John Dewry, 31. Deputy-overman. A wife and three children: Mrs. Dewry 30, William 5, Mary 3, John 1.
William Donnelly, 30. A wife and two children: Mrs. Donnelly 26, Elizabeth 6, Thomas 1. A hewer in the middle-south. Body recovered by 10 p.m Friday, burnt to a cinder at his boards.
William Doxford, 16. Putter. Body recovered by Friday 10p.m.

Edward Dryden, 30. A wife and one child: Mrs. Dryden 24, Agnes 3.
George Fisher, 29. A wife.
John Fittes, 21. Single. Body recovered on Tuesday.

Thomas Fryer, 57. Father of John, 21. Died after going into the pit after the explosion to rescue John. A wife and children: William 17, Jane 15. Body recovered on Monday at 1:50a.m.
John Gallon, 18. Putter.
Ritson Golightly, 15.

James Hamor, 22. First day in the pit. A wife and two children: James 1, William (infant). Body recovered on Tuesday.
Matthew Hepplewhite, 20. Single. Body recovered by 8:00p.m. Friday, badly burnt on the face.

Ralph Herron, 23. A widower. Body recovered on Tuesday.
Robert Jefferson, 59. Died after going into the pit after the explosion to rescue a lost son. A wife and four children. He was also the sole support of his daughter Margaret 27, whose husband had recently died in Australia, and her children David Hume 6, and Ann Hume 4. Body recovered on Monday at 1:50a.m.
John Jervis, 22. Single.
Henry Johnson, 17. Putter.
Isaac Johnson, 16. A lodger of Thomas Thompson. Body recovered on Saturday, having suffocated on afterdamp.
Robert Kyle, 24. A wife and child: Mrs. Kyle 20, George 2, unnamed infant daughter of 3 days. Body recovered on Tuesday.
Thomas Lawson, 22. Single. Body recovered before Sunday afternoon at his board badly burnt. Lived with his widowed mother, his father having been killed in a railway accident.
Robert Leatham, 37. First day in the pit. A nephew of David Addy, 55. A wife and four children: Mrs. Leatham 36, Jane 9, Ann 8, Dorothy 7, Margaret 2. His body had still not been recovered up to Friday, March 9.
George Maddox, 46. A wife and six children: Mrs. Maddox 43, James (married with one child) 23, Alice 18, Jane 15, Sarah 13, George 10, Isabella 7 John 3. Hewer. Body recovered at the next board of John Carr badly burnt, with neck and thighs broken.
James Maddox, 17. Brother of Thomas, 20 and John 15; also the nephew of George 46. Single. Body recovered on Friday before 8:00p.m. at the top of the incline, badly burnt and torn to pieces. A putter for Addy on the south side of the incline.
John Maddox, 15. Single. Body recovered on Saturday morning beside his brother, badly burnt. A putter in the straight-up flat for his Uncle George.
John Maddox, 31. Nephew of George Maddox, 46. A wife and five children: Mrs. Maddox 28, Mary 9, John 6, Thomas 5, Margaret 2, Ann (infant). Body recovered on Friday before 8:00p.m.
Thomas Maddox, 20. Single.
John Marshall, 20. Son of a widow (her main support) and brother of Thomas Marshall, 15. Sisters: Mary Jane 17, Agnes Ann 13, Elizabeth 9, Martha 6. A hewer in the middle-south.
Thomas Marshall, 15. A putter. Body recovered on Friday, one of the first to be recovered, at the top of the incline, badly burnt and having been knocked backwards his spine and skull were damaged.
John McWilliams, 30. A wife and three children: Mary 5, Peter 3, Margaret (infant).
Andrew Messer, 20. Married just prior to the disaster. Body recovered on Tuesday.
Matthew Mordue, 20. Single.
Joseph Musgrave, 17. Body recovered on Tuesday.
James Nichol, 18. Single.
William Nichol, 26. Single. The supporter of aged parents and brother to Sarah 15, George 10.
Benjamin Nicholson, 43. Deputy-overman. A wife and seven children, all girls: Mrs. Nicholson 42, Sarah 19, Ruth 17, Ann 15, Isabella 14, Elizabeth 10, Eleanor 5, Mary 2. Body recovered on Tuesday morning, being dreadfully mangled; only identified by personal effects and a peculiar mark on his cap.
John Pease, 39. A wife and three children: Mrs. Pease 34, Ann 6, Frank 5, Mary 3.

David Phillips, 28. Single. Brother of Thomas, 23.

Martin Sankey, 25. Married three months prior to disaster.
George Schimpf, 26. A wife and one child: Mrs. Schimpf 25, Anne 3. A German native who had been eight years in England. Body recovered at his workings, having suffocated.
George Shotton, 25. A wife and two children.
Francis Smith. Single. Body recovered on Tuesday.
Robert Soulsby, 45. A wife and three children: Mrs. Soulsby 47, Mary Ann 18, William 11, Jane 9.
Edward Thompson, 14. Body recovered by Friday night, badly burnt.
Moses Thompson, 18. Single.
Thomas Thompson, 25. A wife and child: Mrs. Thompson 22, Thomas 1. Also a brother to Moses Thompson. Body recovered on Friday night, badly burnt with his clothes scorched off him.
John Thrift, 20. Single. Brother of George 15. Two orphans, they were the support of their sister aged 16, and contributed to the upkeep of their grandparents named Pease. He was due to marry George Maddox's daughter.

William Turner, 32. A wife and three children: Mrs. Turner 32, Jane 10, John 3, Margaret Jane 1. Body recovered on Monday night.
William Urwin, 45. A wife and five children: Mrs. Urwin 46, William (married) 23, Elizabeth 20, Sarah 18, Mary Ann 15, Margaret 13, Robert 10. The secretary of the Miners' Provident Association. Worked in the area of the straight-up flat. Body had not been recovered up to Sunday afternoon.
James Vought, 30. Single.
Jacob Weatherley, 10.
George Whips, 23. A wife and child, the child being an infant. Body recovered on Monday night.
Thomas Wilkie, 14. Son of William Wilkie, 49. Putter. Body recovered before 8:00p.m. Friday.
William Wilkie, 49. A wife and four children: Mrs. Wilkie 26, Thomas 14, Mary 6, John 4, James 1. Body had still not been recovered up to the evening of Friday March 9.
Thomas Wilkinson, 29. A wife and child, the child since dead. Body recovered on Tuesday, March 20, at a stopping along the straight-up flat, hardly marked at all, having suffocated on afterdamp.
James Wood, 24. Single.
ESCAPED FROM THE PIT
A brother of Thomas Dawson. Found beside Alderson on Friday, barely alive, but he survived.
