BOWLED OVER WITH THE MAYOR’S GENEROSITY

Burradon Bowling Club was successful with its application to the Mayor’s Wellbeing Fund and was awarded a grant of £3,800.

The money will be used to purchase new equipment for the senior team, sprinkler system for the green and lockers for the bowler’s room in the community wing at the new school.

Mr Ralph Wilson, Secretary of Burradon Bowling Club stated “We are delighted with the generosity of The Mayor’s Wellbeing Fund and the money will enable the club to replace the existing equipment which is old and no longer suitable. The present membership is aging and it is important that we attract new members. We moved into the new bowling pavilion in 2006 which replaced the old dilapidated building and hopefully the facility and equipment will convince people that the Club has an exciting future. Bowling is a sport which can be played by all ages and genders, hopefully we will be able to establish a junior team. Equipment specifically for the children has been purchased and includes junior aces bowls, bags, shoes and jackets. The grant will also be used to purchase equipment which will enable disabled people to participate and will attract a wide range of people with different abilities.”

The bowling club is working in partnership with Mr Gillfillan, Headteacher of Burradon Primary School and Mr Colin Mcelligott, Sports Development Officer to encourage local children to learn to play bowls.

The award of the grant to the bowling club follows the £5,000 that was donated to Burradon Juniors AFC in 2007 and demonstrates the importance of the Mayor’s Wellbeing Fund to encouraging people to become involved in sport. The availability of a variety of sports contributes enormously to creating and sustaining community spirit within the village. It is important that residents realise that people are investing significant amounts of time and effort into the village and there are a considerable number of positive developments and events which makes Burradon & Camperdown a real community and a good place to live.
